Ca15-3 Levels

CA 15-3 levels are measurements of a circulating tumor marker found in blood, used primarily to assess disease activity in certain cancers, especially breast cancer. The test detects a fragment of MUC1, a protein released by some tumor cells into the bloodstream, and results are interpreted by comparing concentrations over time rather than relying on a single value. In medicine, changing CA 15-3 levels can help monitor treatment response, identify possible recurrence, or track advanced disease alongside imaging and clinical findings. Elevated levels may also occur in benign conditions or other cancers, so CA 15-3 is not recommended as a standalone screening or diagnostic test.

Leveling Effect

2024

In acid-base chemistry, the leveling effect refers to the limitation imposed by the solvent on the strength of acids and bases in solution. When a base stronger than the solvent's conjugate base is used, it deprotonates the solvent until the base is entirely consumed, making it ineffective against weaker acids. Conversely, an acid stronger than the solvent's conjugate acid protonates the solvent until the acid is depleted, rendering it ineffective against weaker bases. Essentially, the solvent...

Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University One of the goals of chemistry is to use models that account for trends and provide insights into the properties of reactants that contribute to reactivity. Substances have been classified as acids and bases since the time of the ancient Greeks, but the definition of acids and bases has been modified and expanded over the years.1 The ancient Greeks would characterize substances by taste, and defined acids as those that...
