Cardiac Mri

Cardiac MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to create detailed images of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. The examination commonly uses electrocardiographic gating to synchronize image acquisition with the heartbeat, while specialized sequences and, when appropriate, gadolinium-based contrast agents characterize cardiac structure, motion, blood flow, and tissue composition. In medicine, cardiac MRI helps assess ventricular function, myocardial viability, inflammation, scarring, congenital abnormalities, valvular disease, and cardiomyopathies without exposing patients to ionizing radiation. Its ability to combine anatomical, functional, and tissue-level information supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of cardiovascular disease.

Contrast enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows comprehensive in vivo assessment of the heart in small animal models of cardiovascular disease. Here we detail the procedures to perform CMR imaging, reconstruction and analysis using Small Animal Lock-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) in rats.

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...
