Cardiotoxicity Assessment

Cardiotoxicity assessment is the systematic evaluation of how a drug, treatment, or chemical may damage the heart or disrupt its function, an essential step in medical research and patient safety. It combines measurements such as cardiac biomarkers, electrocardiography, imaging, and contractility testing to detect injury, abnormal electrical activity, or impaired pumping, often by comparing treated and control samples or patients over time. These assessments help identify hazardous compounds, clarify dose-related effects, guide clinical monitoring, and support safer drug development. They are particularly important for therapies whose benefits must be balanced against risks such as arrhythmia, heart failure, or myocardial injury.

Chicken embryos, as a classical developmental model, are used in our lab to assess developmental cardiotoxicities following exposure to various environmental contaminants. Exposure methods and morphological/functional assessment methods established are described in this manuscript.

High-Throughput Cardiotoxicity Screening Using Mature Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocyte Monolayers

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) offer an alternative to using animals for preclinical cardiotoxicity screening. A limitation to the widespread adoption of hiPSC-CMs in preclinical toxicity screening is the immature, fetal-like phenotype of the cells. Presented here are protocols for robust and rapid maturation of hiPSC-CMs.

Neurotoxicity Assessment in Adult Danio rerio using a Battery of Behavioral Tests in a Single Tank

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.

Systematic Assessment of Well-Being in Mice for Procedures Using General Anesthesia

We developed a protocol to assess well-being in mice during procedures using general anesthesia. A series of behavioral parameters indicating levels of well-being as well as glucocorticoid metabolites were analyzed. The protocol can serve as a general aid to estimate the degree of severity in a scientific, animal-centered manner.
