Chondral Defect Repair

Chondral defect repair is the treatment of localized damage to articular cartilage, the smooth tissue that covers joint surfaces and enables low-friction movement. Because articular cartilage has limited intrinsic healing capacity, repair strategies aim to restore the cartilage surface, protect underlying bone, and improve joint function. Techniques such as microfracture create small openings in subchondral bone to release marrow-derived cells, while osteochondral grafting or autologous chondrocyte implantation replaces or regenerates damaged tissue. Clinicians select approaches according to defect size, location, symptoms, and patient factors, then assess outcomes through structural repair, pain reduction, mobility, and durability, supporting progress in orthopedic and regenerative medicine.

An experimental technique for the treatment of chondral defects in the rabbit's knee joint is described. The implantation of autologous chondrocytes seeded on a matrix is a well-accepted method for the remodeling and repair of articular cartilage lesions providing satisfying long-term results. Matrix-assisted autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) offers a standardized and clinically established implantation method.

An experimental technique for the treatment of osteochondral defects in the rabbit's knee joint is described. The implantation of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells into osteochondral defects provides a promising development in the field of tissue engineering. The preparation of fibrin-cell-clots in vitro offers a standardized method for implantation.

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

In this paper, we present an in vitro and in situ protocol to repair a tendon gap of up to 1.5 cm by filling it with engineered collagen graft. This was performed by developing a modified suture technique to take the mechanical load until the graft matures into the host tissue.
