Current Fractionation

Current fractionation is the contemporary clinical practice of dividing a prescribed radiation dose into multiple treatment sessions, or fractions, rather than delivering it all at once. Each fraction uses radiation-induced DNA damage to impair tumor-cell survival, while the interval between treatments permits normal tissues to repair sublethal injury; schedule design also reflects differences in tissue sensitivity and cell-cycle effects. In medicine, fractionation guides external-beam radiotherapy for cancers and is adjusted through dose per fraction, total dose, and overall treatment time. Comparing conventional, hypofractionated, and altered schedules helps clinicians balance tumor control, toxicity, treatment convenience, and emerging biologic evidence.

Fractional Distillation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

The accompanying video describes the use of the GELFREE 8100 Fractionation System, which partitions complex protein samples on the basis of molecular weight and recovers the fractions in liquid phase. The video describes how the technology works, how it is used, and provides resultant data, with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of fractionated bovine liver homogenate.

Electrical Current

Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836). An ampere is the...

Current Assets

2024

Current assets are those assets a company expects to use, sell, or convert to cash within one year through normal business operations. They are essential for maintaining liquidity and ensuring smooth business operations. Inventory, a critical component of current assets, varies depending on the type of business. For instance, a retail company like Walmart has an inventory consisting of a wide range of products, from groceries to electronics. In contrast, a construction company like Caterpillar...
