Donor Heart Implantation

Donor heart implantation is a surgical procedure that replaces a patient’s failing heart with a healthy heart from a deceased donor, restoring circulation when advanced heart disease no longer responds to other treatments. During transplantation, surgeons remove the recipient’s diseased heart, connect the donor heart to the major blood vessels, and establish blood flow so the graft can begin pumping. Lifelong immunosuppressive therapy reduces immune rejection, while careful donor-recipient matching and monitoring help protect graft function. The procedure can improve survival and quality of life for eligible patients, although complications such as rejection, infection, and limited donor availability remain important clinical challenges.

We describe an ex vivo isolated working rat heart protocol to test donor heart preservation strategies. This paper describes the protocol for use in static cold storage of rodent donor hearts; however, the protocol can also be used for donor hearts obtained after donation after circulatory death and brain death.
