Endothelial Function Evaluation

Endothelial Function Evaluation is the assessment of how effectively the vascular endothelium regulates blood vessel tone, permeability, and interactions with circulating cells, making it an important indicator of vascular health. In common testing, increased blood flow creates shear stress that stimulates endothelial nitric oxide release; the resulting smooth muscle relaxation produces vasodilation, which can be quantified by flow-mediated dilation and related physiological or biochemical measures. This evaluation supports cardiovascular risk assessment, investigation of conditions such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, and monitoring of responses to lifestyle or pharmacological interventions.

The flow mediated dilation (FMD) test is the most commonly utilized, non-invasive, ultrasound assessment of endothelial function in humans. Although the FMD test has been related with the prediction of future cardiovascular disease and events, it is a physiological assessment with many inherent confounding factors that need to be considered.

A Simple Bioassay for the Evaluation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factors

We describe a simple cell-based bioassay for detecting, quantifying and monitoring the activity of members of the vascular endothelial growth factor family of ligands. The assay uses chimeric receptors expressed in a factor-dependent cell line to provide a semi-quantitative or quantitative assessment of receptor binding and cross-linking by the ligand.
