Female Genital Tract

The female genital tract is the interconnected group of internal reproductive organs that supports sexual reproduction, menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth. It includes the vagina, cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes, which use specialized epithelial linings, smooth muscle, and hormone-responsive tissues to transport sperm and menstrual fluid, enable fertilization, and support implantation and fetal development. In medicine, understanding this anatomy is essential for evaluating infertility, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, infections, and reproductive tract cancers. Knowledge of its structure and function also guides diagnostic imaging, gynecologic procedures, prenatal care, and treatments that protect reproductive and overall health.

The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more pigmented, and hairless. While the...

This video demonstrates the establishment of uropathogenic Escherichia coli infection in a female mouse bladder through transurethral catheter instillation. The injected bacteria successfully establish a urinary tract infection within the bladder, providing a valuable platform for studying healthcare-associated diseases related to the urinary tract.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), though herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is increasingly implicated in genital infections, particularly among younger populations. Transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact, with asymptomatic viral shedding serving as a major route of spread. This characteristic makes HSV-2 difficult to control at a population level, as individuals may unknowingly transmit the virus even in the...

Infection of human tissues with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ex vivo provides a valuable 3D model of virus pathogenesis. Here, we describe a protocol to process and infect tissue specimens from human tonsils and female genital mucosae with HIV-1 and maintain them in culture at the liquid-air interface.
