Functional Morphological Evaluation

Functional morphological evaluation is a medical assessment that examines how anatomical structure relates to tissue or organ function, helping identify abnormalities that may not be apparent from appearance alone. It combines morphological information, such as shape, size, organization, and integrity, with functional measurements obtained through imaging, physiological testing, or clinical examination, allowing structural changes to be interpreted in their biological context. This integrated approach supports diagnosis, disease characterization, treatment planning, and monitoring of progression or recovery. By linking form with performance, functional morphological evaluation provides a more complete understanding of pathology and strengthens the interpretation of clinical and research findings.

This manuscript describes an experimental protocol for evaluating the morphological characteristics and functional status of ribbon synapses in normal mice. The present model is also suitable for noise-induced and age-related cochlear synaptopathy-restricted models. The correlative results of previous mouse studies are also discussed.

Functional and Morphological Assessment of Diaphragm Innervation by Phrenic Motor Neurons

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.
