Gap Balance Assessment

Gap balance assessment is an orthopedic technique used during total knee arthroplasty to evaluate whether the knee’s flexion and extension spaces are appropriately aligned and stabilized. After bone preparation, surgeons use spacer blocks, trial components, and controlled varus-valgus stress to compare the medial and lateral gaps, adjust ligament tension, and identify imbalances caused by bone cuts or soft-tissue tightness. Achieving balanced gaps supports proper implant positioning, joint stability, range of motion, and load distribution. This assessment helps guide intraoperative decisions, reduce postoperative instability, and improve functional outcomes in patients undergoing knee replacement.

Balancing Redox Equations

Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...

Gap Junctions

2026

Multicellular organisms employ a variety of ways for cells to communicate with each other. Gap junctions are specialized proteins that form pores between neighboring cells in animals, connecting the cytoplasm between the two, and allowing for the exchange of molecules and ions. They are found in a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate species, mediate numerous functions including cell differentiation and development, and are associated with numerous human diseases, including cardiac and...

Balance and Coordination Testing

2023

Balance and coordination are critical components involved in the control of movement. Many sensory receptors and neural processing units are required to help individuals maintain balance while performing various activities. Deficits in balance and coordination occur in patients suffering from movement disorders or due to aging. Therefore, scientists are trying to understand the pathophysiology behind these conditions. One way to do that is by using rodent models and testing them on behavioral...
