Hss Knee Score

The HSS Knee Score, or Hospital for Special Surgery Knee Score, is a clinical rating system that quantifies knee function and symptoms, helping clinicians assess disease severity and outcomes after treatment. It combines weighted evaluations of pain, function, range of motion, muscle strength, flexion deformity, and knee instability, with deductions for factors such as walking aids or an extension lag, to produce a score out of 100. In medicine, the HSS Knee Score supports standardized assessment before and after procedures such as total knee arthroplasty, enables comparisons across patients and studies, and helps researchers measure functional recovery over time.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

Introduction to z Scores

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee. A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris group...
