Hydrophobic Paper Support

Hydrophobic paper support is a water-repellent paper substrate used to hold, separate, or stabilize materials in paper-based medical devices and laboratory assays. Its treated fibers resist wetting, limiting the movement of aqueous samples and helping maintain defined reaction zones, while allowing selected fluids or reagents to be positioned where needed. This controlled fluid behavior supports diagnostic workflows, sample preparation, and analytical testing by reducing unintended spreading and improving handling of small sample volumes. Hydrophobic paper supports can therefore contribute to more reproducible, portable, and low-resource medical testing platforms.

Research articles are structured documents designed to communicate scientific findings efficiently and transparently. Rather than reading them sequentially like a narrative, readers can approach them strategically by understanding their standardized organization. Evaluating the title, authors, and institutional affiliations provides an initial indication of relevance, expertise, and credibility. The Abstract offers a concise summary of the study’s objective, methodology, and main findings,...

2017

We detail a method to fabricate three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic devices for use in the development of immunoassays. Our approach to device assembly is a type of multilayer, additive manufacturing. We demonstrate a sandwich immunoassay to provide representative results for these types of paper-based devices.

Calcium-Dependent Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography: A Technique to Purify Calcium-Binding Proteins Based on Hydrophobic Interactions

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the purification of calcium-binding protein from a dialyzed cell lysate through calcium-dependent hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The calcium-binding proteins expose a hydrophobic region upon binding with calcium, facilitating interaction with a hydrophobic group on resin. Later these proteins are eluted using calcium chelator EDTA that reverses the interaction.

A Paper-Based Immunoassay for the Detection of Immunoglobulin G

2025

The video demonstrates a paper-based immunoassay, involving amine-functionalized cellulose discs cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. Covalent immobilization of IgG-Fc-specific capture antibodies, followed by the introduction of immunoglobulin G and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated detection antibodies, results in a color change confirming the presence of immunoglobulin G.

Butyl-Dependant Hydrophobic Interaction Liquid Chromatography: A Technique to Characterize Antibody-Drug Conjugates Based on Hydrophobic Interactions
