Quadriceps Muscle

The quadriceps muscle is a group of four muscles on the front of the thigh that supports knee extension, posture, and lower-limb movement. When motor nerves stimulate these muscles, calcium is released inside the muscle fibers, enabling actin and myosin to interact and generate contraction; the rectus femoris also contributes to hip flexion. In medicine, quadriceps structure and function are assessed in conditions such as muscle strains, tendon injuries, arthritis, and neurological disorders. Strength testing, imaging, and rehabilitation exercises help evaluate recovery, restore gait and mobility, and reduce the risk of weakness-related complications.

Here, we present a modification of a previously reported method that allows for the isolation of high quality and purified mitochondria from smaller quantities of mouse skeletal muscle. This procedure results in highly coupled mitochondria that respire with high function during microplate based respirometirc assays.

Manual Muscle Testing: A Method of Measuring Extremity Muscle Strength Applied to Critically Ill Patients

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.
