Hydroxyapatite Scaffold

Hydroxyapatite scaffolds are three-dimensional biomaterial frameworks made from hydroxyapatite, a calcium phosphate mineral resembling the inorganic component of natural bone, and are used to support tissue repair. Their interconnected pores provide space for cell attachment and tissue ingrowth, while the scaffold surface can promote osteoconduction; gradual ion exchange and material resorption may also support deposition of new mineralized matrix. In medicine, hydroxyapatite scaffolds are investigated for bone defect reconstruction, spinal and dental repair, and as coatings or carriers for regenerative therapies. Their composition, porosity, mechanical strength, and degradation rate must be tailored to match the target tissue and clinical need.
