Icu Patient Monitoring

ICU patient monitoring is the continuous assessment of critically ill patients’ physiological status to detect deterioration and guide timely treatment. It combines bedside observation with measurements such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, temperature, and neurological status, using sensors, monitors, and repeated clinical examinations. Clinicians interpret trends and changes rather than isolated readings, correlating data with symptoms, laboratory results, and treatment response. This approach supports early recognition of respiratory failure, shock, infection, and other acute complications while helping teams adjust ventilation, fluids, medications, and other interventions to improve patient safety and outcomes.

Pain assessment in anesthetized patients who cannot communicate with the outside world in any way remains challenging despite the development of innovative objective pain evaluation tools. In this project, the pupillary dilation reflex and the nociception flexion reflex are assessed in critically ill, mechanically ventilated adult patients.

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.

2020

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of capnography sampling lines used in conjunction with a portable bedside capnography monitor. Sampling lines from 7 manufacturers were evaluated for tensile strength, rise time, and ETCO2 accuracy as a function of respiratory rate or supplemental oxygen flow rate.
