Liver Segmentation

Liver segmentation is the process of delineating the liver from surrounding tissues in medical images, creating a defined region for quantitative and clinical analysis. In computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, clinicians or algorithms identify liver boundaries across image slices using intensity differences, anatomical features, and increasingly trained deep-learning models; the resulting masks can be reviewed and refined for accuracy. Segmentation supports liver-volume measurement, lesion analysis, treatment planning, and assessment of surgical or transplant options. Reliable boundaries also provide standardized input for computer-assisted diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring, linking image data to clinically meaningful measurements in medicine.

Perfusion decellularization is a novel technique to produce whole liver scaffolds that retains the organ's extracellular matrix composition and microarchitecture. Herein, the method of preparing whole organ scaffolds using perfusion decellularization and subsequent repopulation with hepatocytes is described. Functional and transplantable liver grafts can be generated using this technique.
