Mortality Prediction

Mortality prediction is the estimation of an individual’s or population’s risk of death over a defined period, supporting informed decisions in medicine and public health. It combines patient characteristics, clinical measurements, disease severity, and treatment information with statistical models or machine-learning algorithms to identify patterns associated with survival outcomes. Clinicians use these estimates for risk stratification, care planning, resource allocation, and evaluation of treatment strategies, while researchers apply them to compare populations and assess prognostic tools. Reliable prediction requires appropriate data, transparent methods, and evaluation of discrimination and calibration so that estimates remain clinically meaningful and support, rather than replace, professional judgment.

Assessing Pathogenic Bacteria–Induced Mortality in C. elegans Larvae

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.

VSEPR Theory for Determination of Electron Pair Geometries The following procedure uses VSEPR theory to determine the electron pair geometries and the molecular structures: Write the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Count the number of electron groups (lone pairs and bonds) around the central atom. A single, double, or triple bond counts as one region of electron density. Identify the electron-pair geometry based on the number of electron groups: linear, trigonal planar,...

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2011

Guidelines for computer based structural and functional characterization of protein using the I-TASSER pipeline is described. Starting from query protein sequence, 3D models are generated using multiple threading alignments and iterative structural assembly simulations. Functional inferences are thereafter drawn based on matches to proteins with known structure and functions.
