Peri-infarct Zone

The peri-infarct zone is the region of injured but potentially viable tissue surrounding an infarct, most commonly discussed in ischemic stroke, where cellular function is impaired but irreversible damage has not yet occurred. Reduced blood flow limits oxygen and glucose, disrupting ion gradients and energy production; collateral circulation may temporarily sustain cells, while spreading depolarizations, inflammation, and excitotoxic signaling can extend injury into this border region. Identifying the peri-infarct zone with perfusion imaging and related biomarkers helps clinicians estimate salvageable tissue, select patients for reperfusion therapy, and monitor treatment response. Its study also informs neuroprotective strategies and predictions of functional recovery.

Measuring the Infarct Zone and Brain Edema in a Rat Brain Following Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of the infarct zone and brain edema in brain slices from rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion. Infarcted areas are identified using redox staining, while a blue filter and threshold function in image analysis software quantify the infarct zone and edema in the affected hemisphere.

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT While its usefulness in cancer screening is debated, the male rectal examination remains an important part of the physical exam. The exam is indicated in selected patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary and/or fecal incontinence or retention, back pain, anorectal symptoms, abdominal complaints, trauma patients, unexplained anemia, weight loss, or bone pain. 2025

This article details an optimized protocol for echocardiography-guided intramyocardial injections in rat models of myocardial infarction using a 29 G x 88 mm needle. This technique ensures robust, precise, and reproducible delivery of therapeutic agents directly into the peri-infarct zone.

Induction of Myocardial Infarction in Adult Zebrafish Using Cryoinjury

Zebrafish represents a valuable model to study the mechanisms of heart regeneration in vertebrates. Here, we present a protocol for induction of a heart infarct in adult zebrafish using cryoinjury. This method results in massive cell death within 20% of the ventricular wall, similar to that observed in mammalian infarcts.
