Porcine Auto-transplantation Model

The porcine auto-transplantation model is a preclinical surgical system in which a pig’s tissue or organ is removed and reimplanted into the same animal, providing a controlled platform for studying transplantation. Because donor and recipient tissues are genetically identical, the model minimizes confounding allogeneic immune rejection while preserving clinically relevant surgical stress, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and postoperative recovery. Researchers use it to evaluate organ preservation, vascular and anastomotic techniques, graft function, and tissue repair before testing approaches involving donor-recipient incompatibility. Its physiological similarity to humans makes this model valuable for refining procedures, assessing therapeutic strategies, and improving the safety and translation of transplantation research.
