Participant Engagement

Participant engagement is the active involvement of patients, research volunteers, and other participants in medical care or research, helping align decisions and outcomes with their needs and perspectives. It works through clear communication, shared decision-making, trust, and opportunities for participants to provide feedback or influence study and care processes. In clinical research, effective engagement can improve recruitment, retention, adherence to study procedures, and the relevance of collected data. In healthcare, it supports informed choices, self-management, and patient-centered practice, strengthening collaboration between participants, clinicians, and research teams.
