Prosthetic Limb Function

Prosthetic limb function refers to how effectively an artificial limb restores movement, stability, and practical activities after limb loss, making it an important focus of rehabilitation medicine. Function depends on the interaction among the residual limb, socket and suspension system, mechanical or powered joints, and the user’s control signals; in myoelectric devices, sensors detect residual muscle activity to regulate motor-driven movements. Clinicians assess alignment, comfort, range of motion, strength, gait, and task performance to guide fitting and training. Advances in materials, robotics, and neural interfaces aim to improve control, reduce energy demands, and support more natural movement and independence.

The electroretinogram (ERG) is an electrical potential generated by the retina in response to light. This paper describes how to use the ERG to assess retinal function, in dark-adapted rats, and how it can be can be used to assess a neuroprotective intervention, in the present case remote ischemic preconditioning.
