Renal Function Assessment

Renal function assessment is the clinical evaluation of how effectively the kidneys filter blood, regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, and eliminate metabolic waste. It combines measurements such as serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, blood urea nitrogen, urinalysis, and urine albumin to identify impaired filtration or kidney injury; creatinine-based estimates use blood concentration alongside patient factors to approximate filtration capacity. In medicine, these assessments support the detection and staging of chronic kidney disease, recognition of acute kidney injury, medication dose adjustment, and monitoring of treatment or disease progression. Repeated measurements help clinicians distinguish transient changes from persistent renal dysfunction and guide patient management.

Determination of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard to assess overall kidney function. However, traditional procedures to measure this parameter are cumbersome and require a large investment of time. Here we describe a faster and minimally invasive method to determinate GFR transcutaneously.

The effects of activation of protein kinase C (PKC) isozymes on mitochondrial functions associated with respiration and oxidative phosphorylation and on cell viability are described. The approach adapts adenoviral technique to selectively overexpress PKC isozymes in primary cell culture and a variety of assays to determine mitochondrial functions and energy status of the cell.

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.
