Stereo Microscope Surgery

Stereo microscope surgery is a surgical approach that uses a stereomicroscope to provide a magnified, three-dimensional view of anatomical structures, enabling precise manipulation of small or delicate tissues. The instrument creates depth perception by directing separate optical paths to each eyepiece, while adjustable magnification, illumination, and working distance support accurate visualization and instrument control. In medicine, this approach is applied in microsurgery and other procedures requiring fine motor precision, including tissue repair and dissection, and can improve the surgeon’s ability to distinguish structures, limit unnecessary disruption, and perform technically demanding interventions.

Robotized Testing of Camera Positions to Determine Ideal Configuration for Stereo 3D Visualization of Open-Heart Surgery

2021

The human depth perception of 3D stereo videos depends on the camera separation, point of convergence, distance to, and familiarity of the object. This paper presents a robotized method for rapid and reliable test data collection during live open-heart surgery to determine the ideal camera configuration.

This protocol uses multi-view stereo to generate three-dimensional (3D) models out of uncalibrated sequences of photographs, making it affordable and adjustable to a surgical setting. Strain maps between the 3D models are quantified with spline-based isogeometric kinematics, which facilitate representation of smooth surfaces over coarse meshes sharing the same parameterization.

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...
