Vacuum-assisted Excision

Vacuum-assisted excision is a minimally invasive procedure that removes selected tissue lesions through a hollow, vacuum-powered probe, offering an alternative to open surgical excision in appropriate cases. Guided by imaging, such as ultrasound or mammography, the probe is positioned within the lesion, where suction draws tissue into a cutting aperture and repeated sampling removes the target through a small skin incision. In medicine, the technique can provide complete removal of some benign breast lesions while producing less scarring and recovery time than conventional surgery, and the excised tissue can undergo histopathological examination to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

2025

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Base Excision Repair

2020

One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template. The first step of...

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.
