Ventricular Tachycardia Ablation

Ventricular tachycardia ablation is a catheter-based treatment that targets cardiac tissue responsible for rapid, abnormal rhythms arising from the ventricles. During the procedure, electrophysiologic mapping identifies the electrical circuits or focal triggers sustaining ventricular tachycardia, and radiofrequency or cryothermal energy creates controlled lesions that interrupt these pathways. Often performed in patients with structural heart disease or recurrent episodes despite medication, ablation can reduce arrhythmia burden, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator shocks, and hospitalization. Its use integrates cardiac imaging, three-dimensional mapping, and individualized rhythm analysis, supporting more effective management of potentially life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias.

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with an ablation catheter is a curative treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Robotic catheter systems aim to improve catheter steerability. Here, a procedure with a new robotic catheter system is presented. The goal of the procedure is electrical block between pulmonary vein and left atrium.

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.
