Wistar Rats

Wistar rats are an outbred strain of albino laboratory rats widely used as experimental models in medicine because their physiology, behavior, and responses to treatment can be studied under controlled conditions. Researchers maintain defined breeding, housing, and dietary conditions, then assess interventions through measurements such as body weight, behavior, blood chemistry, organ function, and tissue histology. These rats support studies of pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, nutrition, and disease processes, including the evaluation of drug safety and therapeutic effects. Their broad use provides comparative data across experiments, while genetic variability can better reflect some features of diverse biological responses.

2022

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

This protocol demonstrates our model of activity-based locomotor treadmill training for rats with spinal cord injury (SCI). Included is both quadrupedal and forelimb-only groups, in addition to two distinct types of non-trained control groups. Investigators are able to assess training effects on SCI rats using this protocol.

We demonstrate a protocol for axoplasm isolation from adult rat sciatic nerve based on dissection of nerve fascicles and incubation in hypotonic medium to release myelin and lyse non-axonal structures, followed by extraction of the remaining axon-enriched material.

We describe a method to produce an animal model of liver fibrosis in the rat, and assess the degree of fibrosis by histological examination of the liver. The model can be used to study the development of liver disease as well as to test the efficacy of potential anti-fibrotic agents.
