Years Lived With Disability

Years lived with disability (YLDs) quantify nonfatal health loss caused by disease, injury, or other health conditions, making them important for assessing population health beyond deaths alone. They are calculated by multiplying the prevalence or incidence and duration of a condition by a disability weight representing the severity of health loss relative to full health. In medicine, YLDs contribute to disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), support comparisons of conditions across populations, and help identify priorities for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and health-care planning. Tracking YLDs also reveals how chronic and disabling conditions shape overall disease burden.

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning. Dyslexia Dyslexia is a...

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess infants and children's cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds, and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing discomfort in vulnerable patients.

Precise measurement of neurological and neuropsychological impairment and disability in multiple sclerosis is challenging. We report methodologic details on a new test, the Multiple Sclerosis Performance Test (MSPT). This new approach to the objective of quantification of MS related disability provides a computer-based platform for precise, valid measurement of MS severity.
