Acoustic Stimulation Protocol

An acoustic stimulation protocol is a controlled method for delivering sound to investigate how the nervous system detects, processes, and responds to auditory input. Researchers specify stimulus features such as frequency, intensity, duration, timing, and presentation pattern, then measure neural or behavioral responses under standardized conditions. In neuroscience, these protocols can engage auditory pathways from the cochlea through brainstem and cortical circuits, enabling analysis of sensory coding, neural synchronization, and plasticity. They support studies of hearing, attention, communication, and neurological disorders, while careful calibration and experimental control improve reproducibility and help distinguish stimulus-driven effects from general arousal or movement.

In this video we first describe fabrication and operation procedures of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) acoustic counterflow device. We then demonstrate an experimental setup that allows for both qualitative flow visualization and quantitative analysis of complex flows within the SAW pumping device.

A Methodological Protocol and Considerations for Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation in Exploratory Clinical Human Studies

2025

Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) is a promising non-invasive technique capable of stimulating the human brain at any depth, offering new therapeutic possibilities to treat various neurological conditions. This protocol provides a standardized yet adaptable empirical framework for applying TUS in neurotypical adults and patients with neurological diseases such as stroke.

2026

Here, we describe a standardized protocol for motor mapping using nTMS combined with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based reconstruction of the corticospinal tract (CST). The protocol is reproducible, clinically feasible, and readily integrable into routine clinical workflows, providing a robust and valuable framework for motor pathway assessment, neuroplasticity research, and rehabilitation planning.

2011

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.
