Anesthetized Rat

An anesthetized rat is a laboratory rat rendered unconscious or less responsive with an anesthetic agent, providing a controlled preparation for neuroscience research while reducing movement and procedural stress. Anesthesia acts on the central nervous system to suppress sensory processing, reflexes, and motor activity, allowing researchers to perform experiments while monitoring physiological variables such as respiration and cardiovascular function. This preparation supports electrophysiological recordings, neural stimulation, imaging, and neuroanatomical procedures that require stability and precision. Careful selection and monitoring of anesthesia are essential because anesthetic depth can alter neuronal activity and influence the interpretation, reproducibility, and ethical conduct of experimental findings.

2011

Extracellular recordings of neuronal activity using silicon probes in the anesthetized rat will be described. This technique allows information to be obtained across multiple brain areas from more than 100 neurons simultaneously. It provides information with single cell resolution about neuronal ensembles dynamics in multiple local circuits.

Concurrent Electroencephalographic and Local Field Potential Recordings in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for concurrent recordings of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and local field potentials (LFPs) in an anesthetized rat. The process involves preparing the rat and attaching stimulating electrodes to its whisker pads. An EEG spider electrode is placed on the rat's skull for surface EEG measurements. At the same time, a multi-channel microelectrode is inserted into a specific brain region through a burr hole in the skull to record neural activity...

Electrophysiological Methods to Assess Peripheral Pain Block in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

Here, we present a method for assessing the activation and block of sensory axons in peripheral nerves in acute, anesthetized, in vivo rat experiments using two types of spinal electrophysiological measurements that can discriminate the activity of nerve fiber subtypes: Local Field Potentials and Wide Dynamic Range single neuron recordings.
