Anodal Cathodal Polarization

Anodal-cathodal polarization is the change in neuronal membrane potential and excitability produced by applying electrical current through differently charged electrodes, a principle used in neuroscience and neuromodulation. During direct-current stimulation, cathodal current typically depolarizes neuronal membranes beneath the cathode, whereas anodal current tends to hyperpolarize membranes near the anode; the resulting effects depend on current intensity, electrode arrangement, tissue orientation, and stimulation context. Researchers use these polarization patterns to examine synaptic and circuit function, modify motor or sensory responses, and investigate therapeutic approaches for neurological disorders. Understanding their context-dependent effects supports improved stimulation protocols and interpretation of neurophysiological experiments.

Source: Okamoto, A., et al. Self-standing Electrochemical Set-up to Enrich Anode-respiring Bacteria On-site. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the use of an on-site electrochemical system to enrich anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) from natural reservoirs. A redox gradient is established by placing the anode in oxygen-free deep water and the cathode in oxygen-rich surface water. ARB form biofilms and transfer electrons to the anode, which flows to the cathode, where oxygen is reduced,...

A method of fabricating, in ambient conditions, organic photovoltaic tandem devices in a parallel configuration is presented. These devices feature an air-processed, semi-transparent, carbon nanotube common cathode.

Merging Ion Concentration Polarization between Juxtaposed Ion Exchange Membranes to Block the Propagation of the Polarization Zone

2017

The protocol for a novel ion concentration polarization (ICP) platform that can stop the propagation of the ICP zone, regardless of the operating conditions is described. This unique ability of the platform lies in the use of merging ion depletion and enrichment, which are two polarities of the ICP phenomenon.

Group Polarization

2020

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...

Molecular Shape and Polarity

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...
