Astrocyte Labeling

Astrocyte labeling is the use of molecular markers, fluorescent reporters, or other tracers to identify and visualize astrocytes, the glial cells that support neuronal function and maintain the brain’s extracellular environment. In neuroscience, labeling commonly relies on astrocyte-enriched proteins such as GFAP, S100β, or ALDH1L1, detected through immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence, while genetically encoded reporters can mark living cells and their processes. These approaches reveal astrocyte distribution, morphology, and interactions with neurons and blood vessels. They are essential for studying neurodevelopment, synaptic regulation, injury responses, gliosis, and neurological disease, while enabling comparisons of astrocyte activity across brain regions and experimental conditions.
