Conditional Mice

Conditional mice are genetically engineered animals in which a specific gene can be activated, inactivated, or modified in selected cells or at a defined time, enabling precise investigation of gene function. Typically, loxP sequences flank the target gene, and Cre recombinase excises the intervening DNA; tissue-specific or inducible Cre systems provide spatial or temporal control, sometimes following drug administration. In neuroscience, these models help researchers link genes to neuronal development, synaptic function, circuit activity, and behavior while limiting effects in other tissues. Conditional mice therefore support studies of neurological disease mechanisms and the evaluation of potential therapeutic targets.

The preparation presented here for whisker-signaled eyeblink conditioning in head-fixed mice precisely stimulates specific whiskers while allowing mice to ambulate on a cylindrical treadmill. A whisker stimulation conditioned stimulus (CS) paired with a periorbital shock unconditioned stimulus (US) results in reliable associative learning on this apparatus.
