Cortical Implantation

Cortical implantation is a neurosurgical procedure that places electrodes or other devices on or within the cerebral cortex to monitor, stimulate, or interface with neural activity. During implantation, a craniotomy or burr hole provides access to the brain, while implanted sensors detect electrical signals generated by cortical neurons; stimulation systems can deliver controlled currents to selected regions. In neuroscience, these interfaces support studies of brain function, epilepsy, motor control, and sensory processing, and can help develop brain-computer interfaces and neuroprosthetic technologies. The procedure also provides a foundation for investigating how neural signals can be recorded, interpreted, and translated into therapeutic or assistive outcomes.

2025

This video demonstrates the implantation of a soft electrocorticography array and the long-term cortical recordings in a minipig. It outlines the steps involved in surgically implanting the array over the minipig's auditory cortex and recording both baseline and sound stimulus-evoked neuronal action potentials.

We have developed a whole-cortical electrocorticographic array for the common marmoset that continuously covers almost the entire lateral surface of cortex, from the occipital pole to the temporal and frontal poles. This protocol describes a chronic implantation procedure of the array in the epidural space of the marmoset brain.

Astrocytes have been recognized to be versatile cells participating in fundamental biological processes that are essential for normal brain development and function, and central nervous system repair. Here we present a rapid procedure to obtain pure mouse astrocyte cultures to study the biology of this major class of central nervous system cells.
