Cryoprotectant Immersion

Cryoprotectant immersion is a preservation method in which biological tissue or cells are placed in a solution that limits damage during cooling or freezing. Cryoprotectants such as dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol, or specialized aqueous formulations reduce ice-crystal formation by replacing some cellular water and altering solution properties, while controlled exposure helps limit osmotic stress and toxicity. In neuroscience, the approach can preserve brain tissue, neural cells, or experimental samples for later structural, molecular, or functional analysis. Properly optimized immersion conditions support reproducible tissue handling and help maintain cellular architecture, making the method valuable in neurobiology, pathology, and cryobiological research.

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Sanjay Adhikari; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Objects, vehicles, and organisms immersed in fluid mediums experience forces from the surrounding fluid in the form of buoyancy- a vertical upward force due to fluid weight, drag- a resistive force opposite the direction of motion, and lift- a force perpendicular to the direction of motion. Prediction and characterization of these forces is...

2010

Classical fear conditioning paradigm was adapted for human participants in a fully immersive virtual reality setting. Using a discrimination paradigm, conditioned fear, cue and context memory retention, and extinction was measured with skin conductance response to dynamic virtual snakes and spiders (the conditioned stimuli) in two distinct virtual contexts.
