Dendritic Tree Size

Dendritic tree size describes the extent and complexity of a neuron's branched dendrites, which receive and integrate signals from other cells. It reflects features such as total dendritic length, number of branches, branching patterns, and spatial coverage; these properties influence how synaptic inputs reach the cell body and combine to shape neuronal responses. In neuroscience, measuring dendritic tree size helps researchers study neuronal development, circuit organization, and activity-dependent structural plasticity. Changes in dendritic architecture can reveal how experience, disease, injury, or experimental treatments affect neural connectivity and information processing.

Tree Identification: How To Use a Dichotomous Key

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University A dichotomous key is a tool that identifies items in nature, such as leaves. This method is based on the idea of choosing between two characteristics. The word dichotomous comes from two Greek words that mean “to divide into two parts.” In a dichotomous key for leaf identification, each pair of phrases describes different features of the leaf. Only one of the phrases correctly applies to the leaf being keyed out. The...

Tree Survey: Point-Centered Quarter Sampling Method

2023

A number of methods are available for sampling forest communities. Point-centered quarter is one such method. It is used to gather information on the density, frequency, and coverage of tree species found in a forest. This information provides the ability to estimate the number of individual trees encountered, how often a certain tree occurs, how common the tree is compared to other trees, and the size of the tree. Compared to the standard plot analysis, the point-centered quarter method is...

The Tree of Life - Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotes

The “tree of life” describes the evolution of life and the evolutionary relationships between organisms. The root of the tree is the common ancestor to all life on Earth. All other species radiate from this point, much like the branches of a tree. The numerous tips of these branches on the tree of life represent every living, or extant, species. Extinct species, which are species that no longer exist, can be found towards the center of the tree. Currently, these organisms, both extant and...
