Electrode Stimulation

Electrode stimulation is a technique that uses electrical signals delivered through electrodes to activate, inhibit, or otherwise modulate excitable cells and neural circuits. In neuroscience, applied current changes the electric field across neuronal membranes, shifting membrane potential and, when sufficient to reach threshold, initiating action potentials; pulse amplitude, duration, frequency, and electrode placement shape the response. Researchers use it to probe circuit function, map brain regions, and study neural connectivity, while clinical systems apply related principles in neuromodulation and neuroprosthetic interfaces. Careful control of stimulation parameters helps distinguish causal effects from associated neural activity and supports safer, more targeted interventions.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an established technique to modulate cortical excitability1,2. It has been used as an investigative tool in neuroscience due to its effects on cortical plasticity, easy operation, and safe profile. One area that tDCS has been showing encouraging results is pain alleviation 3-5.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

2025

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
