Anesthesia Neonatal Piglet

Neonatal piglet anesthesia is the controlled, reversible reduction of sensation, awareness, and movement in newborn pigs, enabling humane and reproducible neuroscience experiments. It works by administering anesthetic agents that depress neuronal excitability and alter synaptic signaling, while supportive care and monitoring help maintain ventilation, circulation, body temperature, and an appropriate depth of anesthesia. In neuroscience, this approach supports procedures such as electrophysiological recording, neuroimaging, surgical preparation, and studies of early brain development, but anesthetic state can itself influence neural activity and physiological measurements. Careful protocol selection and continuous monitoring therefore improve animal welfare and the interpretability of experimental outcomes.

Measuring Brain Glutamate Levels Under Anesthesia in Neonatal Piglets Using a Microelectrode Array

2025

This video demonstrates the measurement of glutamate levels in the brain of an anesthetized neonatal piglet using a microelectrode array (MEA). The procedure involves creating a craniotomy window in the pig skull and inserting the MEA into the brain region of interest. The glutamate-oxidase-coated recording sites of the MEA convert extracellular brain glutamate to hydrogen peroxide, which generates a measurable current. This current is measured and normalized against background noise to...

Development of a Neonatal Piglet Acute Lung Injury Model Recreating the Early Environment of Preterm Infant Lungs

2025

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.

Exposing Brachial Plexus: A Surgical Technique to Visualize Brachial Plexus in Neonatal Piglet

2025

This video describes an in vivo surgical procedure to expose the brachial plexus, a neural network that supplies cutaneous and muscular interventions to the upper limb. This surgery helps locate the plexus and eventually assess the extent of nerve injury involving the upper limb.

Use of a Piglet Model for the Study of Anesthetic-induced Developmental Neurotoxicity (AIDN): A Translational Neuroscience Approach

2017

Anesthesia-induced developmental neurotoxicity (AIDN) research has focused on rodents, which are not broadly applicable to humans. Non-human primate models are more relevant, but are cost-prohibitive and difficult to use for experimentation. The piglet, in contrast, is a clinically relevant, practical animal model ideal for the study of anesthetic neurotoxicity.
