Electrophysiological Testing

Electrophysiological testing is a set of methods used to measure electrical activity in living cells, tissues, or neural systems, providing functional information that structural imaging alone cannot capture. In neuroscience, electrodes detect voltage changes generated when ions move across cell membranes, either from individual neurons or coordinated populations; recording conditions and electrode placement determine the signals obtained. These measurements support techniques such as electroencephalography and nerve conduction studies, helping researchers characterize brain rhythms, sensory and motor pathways, neural communication, and abnormalities in nervous system function. By linking electrical signals to behavior and physiology, electrophysiological testing contributes to basic neuroscience, clinical assessment, and evaluation of interventions.
