Methanol Chloroform Water

Methanol chloroform water is a biphasic solvent system used to extract and separate lipids and other biomolecules from biological samples, including brain tissue. Methanol disrupts protein and cellular interactions, while chloroform dissolves hydrophobic compounds; adding water promotes phase separation, directing lipids into the organic layer and polar metabolites, salts, and proteins toward the aqueous or interfacial fractions. In neuroscience, this approach supports the analysis of membrane lipids, myelin components, signaling molecules, and metabolic changes in neural tissue. The resulting extracts can be examined by chromatography or mass spectrometry to characterize brain composition and disease-associated biochemical alterations.

Colletotrichum fioriniae Development in Water and Chloroform-based Blueberry and Cranberry Floral Extracts

2019

Here, bioassays designed to monitor the development of a fungal pathogen, Colletotrichum fioriniae, in the presence of blueberry or cranberry floral extracts on glass coverslips are described. Water-, chloroform-, and field rainwater- based floral extraction techniques are detailed as well as insight into how this information can be applied.

This manuscript describes a simple and high-throughput method for assembling water-soluble proteins with hydrophobic pigments that is based on water-in-oil emulsions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in the assembly of native chlorophylls with four variants of recombinant water-soluble-chlorophyll binding proteins (WSCPs) of Brassica plants expressed in E. coli.

A 'Plug and Play' Method to Create Water-dispersible Nanoassemblies Containing an Amphiphilic Polymer, Organic Dyes and Upconverting Nanoparticles

2015

Organic dye molecules and oleic acid coated upconverting nanoparticles are not water-soluble. This protocol describes a ‘plug and play’ method that enables the transfer of organic dye molecules and upconverting particles from their initial hydrophobic solvent to water.
