Olfactory Robot

Olfactory robots are robotic systems that detect, identify, and sometimes localize airborne chemicals, mimicking key functions of biological smell. They typically combine an array of gas sensors with signal-processing or machine-learning algorithms that analyze sensor responses, odor signatures, concentration changes, and airflow to infer the presence and source of a volatile compound. In neuroscience, these platforms provide testable models for studying odor coding, sensory integration, and odor-guided navigation, while supporting comparisons between artificial sensing and biological olfactory circuits. Their applications include environmental monitoring, safety, biomarker research, and the development of biologically inspired artificial olfaction.

We describe a protocol for using insect antennae in the form of electroantennograms (EAGs) on autonomous robots. Our experimental design allows stable recordings within a day and resolves individual odor patches up to 10 Hz. The efficiency of EAG sensors for olfactory searches is demonstrated in driving a robot toward an odor source.

The capability to localize an odor source is necessary for insect survival and is expected to be applicable to artificial odor-tracking. The insect-controlled robot is driven by an actual silkmoth and enables us to evaluate the odor-tracking capability of insects through a robotic platform.

Quadruple Immunostaining of the Olfactory Bulb for Visualization of Olfactory Sensory Axon Molecular Identity Codes

2017

Olfactory sensory neurons express a wide variety of axon-sorting molecules to establish proper neural circuitry. This protocol describes an immunohistochemical staining method to visualize combinatorial expressions of axon-sorting molecules at the axon termini of olfactory sensory neurons.

Cilia of olfactory sensory neurons contain proteins of the signal transduction cascade, but a detailed spatial analysis of their distribution is difficult in cryosections. We describe here an optimized approach for whole mount labeling and en face visualization of ciliary proteins.
