Epilepsy Mouse Model

An epilepsy mouse model is a laboratory mouse that reproduces key features of epilepsy, including recurrent seizures, abnormal electrical activity, or disease-associated brain changes, enabling controlled neuroscience research. Models may arise through genetic engineering or by inducing seizures with chemoconvulsants or electrical stimulation, which alter neuronal excitability and network synchronization. Researchers assess electroencephalography, behavior, brain circuitry, and molecular changes to compare disease mechanisms across model types. These systems support studies of epileptogenesis, seizure prediction, and neurobiology while providing platforms for evaluating antiseizure drugs and potential therapies before clinical testing.

This video demonstrates a method for high-resolution EEG recording in a rat model of focal epilepsy. It outlines the steps involved in preparing the rat, connecting a multichannel EEG mini-cap to the rat's scalp, and recording the EEG to identify seizure-related events characteristic of the epilepsy model.

The amygdala plays a key role in temporal lobe epilepsy, which originates in and propagates from this structure. This article provides a detailed description of the fabrication of deep brain electrodes with both recording and stimulating functions. It introduces a model of medial temporal lobe epilepsy originating from the amygdala.

Neuronal Death Assay to Evaluate Cell Death in Ex Vivo Epilepsy Model

2025

This video demonstrates the technique of assessing neuronal death in rhinal cortex-hippocampus organotypic slices. Neuronal death occurs via evolving epileptic seizures — resembling in vivo epilepsy — and is detected through dual-staining of the dead cells using propidium iodide and immunofluorescence.
