Membrane Property Analysis

Membrane Property Analysis is the quantitative study of how cell membranes store charge, regulate ion movement, and generate electrical signals, making it essential for understanding neuronal excitability. In neuroscience, researchers measure membrane potential, input resistance, capacitance, and ion conductances using electrophysiological approaches such as current-clamp and voltage-clamp recordings; controlled changes in injected current or membrane voltage reveal how ion channels shape cellular responses. These measurements help characterize resting potential, action-potential generation, synaptic integration, and changes in neuronal function caused by development, disease, or pharmacological treatments. The analysis also supports computational models and the evaluation of therapies targeting membrane excitability.

Physical Properties Of Minerals II: Polymineralic Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Presented here is a protocol for the recording of muscle velocity recovery cycles (MVRCs), a new method of examining muscle membrane properties. MVRCs enable in vivo assessment of muscle membrane potential and alterations in muscle ion channel function in relation to pathology, and it enables the demonstration of muscle depolarization in neurogenic muscles.

Cell-free reconstitution has been a key tool to understand the cytoskeleton assembly, and work in the last decade has established approaches to study septin dynamics in minimal systems. Presented here are three complementary methods to observe septin assembly in different membrane contexts: planar bilayers, spherical supports, and rod supports.
