Motor Task Execution

Motor task execution is the process by which the nervous system converts an intended movement into coordinated muscle activity, enabling actions such as reaching, walking, or grasping. In neuroscience, cortical motor areas generate and refine movement commands, while the corticospinal tract transmits signals to spinal motor circuits; sensory feedback from muscles, joints, and vision then helps adjust force, timing, and accuracy. The basal ganglia contribute to action selection and initiation, and the cerebellum supports coordination and error correction. Studying motor task execution helps researchers understand brain function, motor learning, and impairments caused by neurological injury or disease.

In order to harness the power of their brains, humans must develop high-level cognitive processes that manage basic brain functions. These processes make up what psychologists refer to as executive function. Executive function is a key factor in many self-regulatory behaviors, including forming...

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Attention, working-memory, planning, impulse control, inhibition, and mental flexibility are important components of human cognition that are often referred to as executive functions. Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that is characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. It is a disorder that lasts a lifetime, and is thought to affect...
