Muscle Spindle Afferent

A muscle spindle afferent is a sensory neuron that carries information from muscle spindles to the central nervous system, supporting proprioception and the regulation of movement. When intrafusal muscle fibers stretch, primary group Ia and secondary group II endings change their firing rates and transmit signals through sensory pathways in the spinal cord; Ia afferents also contribute to the stretch reflex by activating motor neurons that contract the stretched muscle. Studying these afferents helps explain muscle tone, posture, reflex responses, and sensorimotor control, with applications in neuroscience research on movement disorders, motor learning, and rehabilitation.

Mesenteric afferent nerves convey information from the gastrointestinal tract towards the brain regarding normal homeostasis as well as pathophysiology. Gastrointestinal afferent nerve activity can be assessed by mounting isolated intestinal segments with attached afferent nerves into an organ bath, isolating the nerve, and assessing basal as well as stimulated activity.

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from the afferent neurons in a paralyzed zebrafish larva by positioning a micropipette near the lateral line ganglion and forming a loose seal for signal capture. The extracellular solution maintains neuronal viability during this process.
