Neurobiology Methods

Neurobiology methods are experimental approaches used to investigate how nervous systems are organized, function, and change, providing the practical foundation for neuroscience research. They combine techniques such as electrophysiology, microscopy, molecular assays, genetic manipulation, and behavioral analysis: electrophysiology records neuronal voltage or current, while imaging and molecular labeling reveal cell structure, activity, and protein distribution. Researchers use these methods to connect neural circuits with sensation, movement, cognition, and disease by comparing cellular and behavioral outcomes under controlled conditions. Together, they support studies of development, neurodegeneration, pharmacology, and brain-computer interfaces while linking biological mechanisms to nervous-system function.

An Introduction to Developmental Neurobiology

2023

Developmental neuroscience is a field that explores how the nervous system is formed, from early embryonic stages through adulthood. Although it is known that neural progenitor cells follow predictable stages of proliferation, differentiation, migration, and maturation, the mechanisms controlling the progression through each stage are incompletely understood. Studying development is not only important for understanding how complex structures are assembled, but also for characterizing and...

Drosophila Adult Brain Dissection: A Method in Fly Neurobiology

2023

This video describes how to dissect and isolate the adult Drosophila brain–a procedure necessary for visualizing the organ, which is otherwise obscured by the cuticle, eye, and tracheal tissue. The example protocol shows a detailed demonstration yielding high-quality preparations that can be used for immunostaining and imaging methods in Drosophila neurobiology.

2011

The comparative species approach allows behavioral neuroscientists to explore various neurobiological factors associated with specific behaviors viewed as characteristic of a specific animal model. Taking advantage of naturally occurring differences in behavior between closely related species, this technique doesn’t require invasive techniques to manipulate the expression of the behavior.

2015

Here we present a protocol to induce activity-based anorexia (ABA) in female adolescent mice. ABA is a condition of hyperactivity evoked by imposing food restriction on rodents with access to a running wheel. This phenomenon is being used as a model to study the underlying neurobiology of anorexia nervosa.

Zebrafish Brain Dissection: A Technique of Fish Neurobiology
