Pupil Tracking System

A pupil tracking system is a measurement tool that records changes in pupil size and eye position to study visual behavior and autonomic responses. Typically, an infrared camera and image-processing software identify the pupil and corneal reflection, allowing the system to estimate gaze direction while monitoring pupil diameter under controlled lighting and experimental conditions. In neuroscience, these measurements help researchers assess attention, arousal, sensory processing, cognitive effort, and responses to stimuli. Pupil tracking can support behavioral experiments, eye movement analysis, and investigations of brain activity, providing a noninvasive link between observable eye behavior and underlying neural processes.

Eye tracking has long been used to study gaze patterns in typically-developing individuals, but recent technological advancements have made its use with clinical populations, including autism, more feasible. While eye-tracking young children with autism can offer insight into early symptom manifestations, it involves methodological challenges. Suggestions for best practices are provided.

Eye Tracking in Cognitive Experiments

2023

Eye tracking as the name suggests involves tracking of eye-movements. It is a non-invasive, sensitive tool that quantifies and measures eye-movements to describe an individuals' cognitive state. An eye-movement between two fixation points is called a saccade, which is one of the fastest motor movements in our body. By observing the profiles of these eye movements, scientists can better understand neural deficits in patients with cognitive impairments. In this video, we will first look at an...

Cited by 41 •

2016

A method is described to quantify the quality of visual information processing based on reflexive eye movements in response to specific visual modalities. Reaction times and fixation output parameters are used to characterize visual performance in children with and without visual impairments from 6 months of age.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In a staggeringly complex and engaging world, it is crucial to selectively process some stimuli at the expense of others. Experimental psychologists call this ability attention. Specifically, visual attention refers to the ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Many paradigms used to study visual attention involve brief, punctuated, and repeated trials. However, everyday situations often place sustained demands...
