Rat Head Shaving

Rat head shaving is the controlled removal of scalp fur to prepare a rat for neuroscience procedures that require clean, visible access to the head. Typically performed before anesthesia-supported surgery or other cranial preparation, clipping exposes the skin so researchers can disinfect the site, mark anatomical landmarks, and position instruments or recording devices with greater precision. This step supports stereotaxic surgery, cranial-window implantation, electrophysiological recording, and behavioral studies involving head-mounted equipment by improving visualization and reducing interference from fur. Consistent preparation can promote reproducible procedures and help protect animal welfare when combined with appropriate handling, analgesia, and institutional protocols.

2015

This protocol describes the isolation of satellite cells from branchiomeric head muscles of a 9 week-old rat. The muscles originate from different branchial arches. Subsequently, the satellite cells are cultured on a spot coating of millimeter size to study their differentiation. This approach avoids the expansion and passaging of satellite cells.

Juxtacellular Monitoring and Localization of Single Neurons within Sub-cortical Brain Structures of Alert, Head-restrained Rats

This protocol describes the design and surgical implantation of a head-restraining mechanism to monitor neuronal activity in sub-cortical brain structures in alert rats. It delineates procedures to isolate single neurons in the juxtacellular configuration and to efficiently identify their anatomical locations.

Implanting an On-Head Electrode System in a Rat Model for Real-Time Seizure Detection

This video demonstrates the method of implanting an on-head electrode system in an anesthetized rat for real-time seizure detection. The procedure includes placing stimulation and recording electrodes, securing them with dental cement, and connecting them to a head-mounted amplifier.

A Technique to Isolate Satellite Cells From Rat Head Muscle Tissue

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of satellite cells from rat head branchiomeric muscle tissues through tissue dissection, enzymatic digestion, and subsequent mechanical and centrifugal purification. The cells are then seeded on extracellular matrix-coated wells for differentiation into myoblasts, and eventually into myotubes and mature muscle fibers.
