Bronchodilators

Bronchodilators are medications that relax airway smooth muscle, widen the bronchi, and improve airflow, making them important in pharmacology and respiratory disease management. They act through distinct mechanisms: beta2-adrenergic agonists increase cyclic AMP to produce smooth-muscle relaxation, while anticholinergic agents block muscarinic signaling that promotes bronchoconstriction; methylxanthines can also enhance bronchodilation by inhibiting phosphodiesterase activity. Short-acting drugs provide rapid relief of bronchospasm, whereas long-acting agents help maintain airway opening. These medications support symptom control in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other conditions involving reversible or persistent airflow limitation, while their mechanisms and adverse effects guide individualized treatment.

2024

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.
