Insomnia Treatment

Insomnia treatment is the clinical management of difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or of early awakening, with pharmacology providing medicines that target sleep-wake regulation. In practice, hypnotic drugs may enhance inhibitory GABA-A signaling, block orexin receptors that promote wakefulness, or activate melatonin receptors to influence circadian timing. Pharmacological treatment can shorten sleep-onset latency and improve sleep continuity, but clinicians must match therapy to the underlying pattern and consider next-day sedation, drug interactions, tolerance, and dependence. In pharmacology education and research, comparing mechanisms, pharmacokinetics, and safety profiles supports more individualized insomnia care.
