Seizure Activity

Seizure activity is a period of abnormal, excessive, and synchronized electrical discharge in the brain that can disrupt sensation, movement, awareness, or behavior. It develops when excitatory and inhibitory signaling become imbalanced, causing groups of neurons to fire together and produce characteristic changes in brain activity and clinical function. In pharmacology, studying seizure activity helps researchers evaluate how antiseizure drugs alter neuronal excitability, identify therapeutic targets, and distinguish beneficial effects from toxicity. Experimental models and electrophysiological recordings can measure seizure onset, duration, and severity, supporting drug discovery and the development of treatments for epilepsy and other conditions involving abnormal neural excitability.

Using a webcam and a combination of free and inexpensive software programs, locomotive patterns in Drosophila melanogaster can be analyzed to detect differences in the speed, distance, and time of various motor activities.

Monitoring Seizure-Induced Neural Electrical Activity in Brain Slices Using Microelectrode Arrays

2025

This protocol involves using a microelectrode array (MEA) to record electrical activity in a brain slice exposed to a seizure-inducing drug. The procedure includes positioning the brain slice in an MEA recording chamber, applying electrical stimulation to induce artificial seizures, and analyzing the resulting signals.

Electroconvulsive Seizures in Rats and Fractionation of Their Hippocampi to Examine Seizure-induced Changes in Postsynaptic Density Proteins

Electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) is an experimental animal model of electroconvulsive therapy for severe depression. ECS globally stimulates activity in the hippocampus, leading to synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Here, we describe methods for ECS induction in rats and for subcellular fractionation of their hippocampi to examine seizure-induced changes in synaptic proteins.

Direct-current Stimulation and Multi-electrode Array Recording of Seizure-like Activity in Mice Brain Slice Preparation

Studies have shown that cathodal transcranial direct-current stimulation can produce suppressive effects on drug-resistant seizures. In this study, an in vitro experimental setup was devised in which the direct-current stimulation and multielectrode array recording of seizure-like activity were evaluated in mice brain slice preparation. The direct-current stimulation parameters were evaluated.

Handling-Induced Seizures in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of handling-induced seizures in a mouse infected with Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV). The infected mouse, which has hyperexcitable neurons, is exposed to external physical stimuli. This exposure causes stress, leading to abnormal electrical activity in the neurons, which results in seizures.
